Underwater Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Some athletes at the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus have traded hockey sticks and protective gear for flippers and goggles - but they're keeping the puck.

Some faculty members and others are hooked on underwater hockey.

It combines elements of ice hockey and water polo and for most of those who play it, it's serious business.

University researcher Ben Erickson tells The Minnesota Daily the sport has taken him half way around the world and back. Erickson has represented the United States on the national underwater hockey team in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Erickson says his club, the Minnesota Loons Underwater Hockey, has male and female athletes from 17 to beyond 50.
