University of Minnesota May 2012 Starwatch

By Deane Morrison

May is full of delights, starting with a full moon on the 5th.

This moon, known to Algonquin Indians as the flower moon, milk moon or corn planting moon, rises only about two hours before the moment of perfect fullness, which comes at 10:35 p.m. Not only that, but the moon will be at perigee-its closest approach to Earth in its orbit-only three minutes before fullness, so it will be not only round but big, although the size difference may well be imperceptible.

Severe Weather Awareness Week

With a tornado already reported in the state this year, Minnesotans are again reminded about the dangers of spring and summer storms.

Severe Weather Awareness week in Minnesota, which kicks off April 16, is a good time for families, schools and businesses to learn about weather warnings and practice what to do in the event of a severe storm.

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, statewide tornado drills will be held at 1:45 and 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, April 19 to accommodate safety planning for schools, businesses, families and second-shift workers. Most of Minnesota's 87 counties will participate in the evening drill.

In real weather emergencies, Minnesotans can turn to National Oceanographic and Atmospheric (NOAA) weather radio broadcasts for watches, warnings and forecasts. A NOAA radio is particularly important for those who need extra time to react to bad weather.

Severe Weather Awareness Week

The week of April 16th - 20th, 2012 is "Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota". Each day of the week will have a specific topic such as "Thunderstorms, Hail, Straight-Line Winds and Lightning", "Severe Weather Warning Systems" etc. The goal of this special week is to educate Minnesotans on the need to be ready by getting a kit, making a plan, and being informed.

Minnesota will be conducting a statewide Tornado Drill on April 19th.

The traditional afternoon statewide drill will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. The statewide drill will conclude at 2:00 p.m.

Snow Needed for Ely Ice Sculptures

The heart and soul of Ely's Winter Festival is in jeopardy and area residents may have the answer.

A campaign is underway to bring snow for snow sculptures to Whiteside Park from homes and areas around Ely by the bag or box, in coolers or by the pickup load. Co-director of the International Snow Sculpting Symposium Chris Ellerbroek said he "will be setting up one big form in the park and one at the Front Porch this weekend. I will set up another form in the park if people want to give this a try. The important thing is that we need clean snow."

Although some snow will be brought in from Shagawa Lake, there is not enough snow on the ground to fill the usual 20 wood frames that range is size from 8'x8' to 12'x12'.

Ellerbroek said, "We need to make sure we let people know they can't just drive in the park to dump the snow without coordinating that with me for liability and safety.
