DNR Commissioner: Fishing Connected Me to Nature, Can Help Nurture Your Kids, Too

As I reflect on things that have shaped who I am, I realize that it is many things and many people, but also that fishing played a major role.

Summer Hours Begin at Hill Annex Mine State Park

The Hill Annex Mine State Park, just north of Grand Rapids will begin their fossil-hunting tours and guided, historical bus tours on Friday, May 25.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the park will be open to the public Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., from May 25 through September 1. The grounds include a historic iron-ore mine, an interpretive museum with a gift shop, a picnic area and access to the Mesabi Bike Trail.

Fishing is Free in Most Minnesota State Parks

No one should feel left out when talk turns – as it does this time of year – to plans for the big Minnesota fishing opener.

Any state resident who wants to participate in that annual rite of spring can now do so easily and for free at most Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.

Selling Hot Dogs at Super One

The Northland councils of the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a fundraiser from May 9 through May 12, to raise funds for the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis.

The Knights of Columbus will be selling freshly grilled hot dogs and brats, chips and soda for only $2.00 and $3.00 at local Super One stores.

The Shiners Hospital, which enables children to receive life-changing care at free or reduced cost for families, receives 100% of the funds raised. Local Knights of Columbus chapters have raised more than $250,000 over the past 14 years.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization that donates funds to a number of national charitable organizations. Last year, 70 million hours of time was volunteered nationally. For more information please contact local Chair, Denny Krenner at 218-729-7804.
