DNR Lifting Most Burning Restrictions Wednesday

Burning restrictions will soon be lifted in several counties in northern Minnesota due to the green-up of fire fuels, which eases wildfire conditions, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Quilt Guild Presentation at MDC

The 'Going to Pieces' Quilters Guild of Virginia will be celebrating its 30-year anniversary at the Minnesota Discovery Center on Saturday, May 12th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with quilting exhibits, lecture, demonstrations, and assessments for vintage quilts. The public is invited!

The exhibit showcases 90 quilts and quilted objects. See the creative advances from their first to most current quilts. Within each quilt the women's personalities show through from humor to artistic vision.

Lecture by author and quilting extraordinaire Darlene Zimmerman. Darlene's quilting career began by designing tools for EZ quilting and she now has 20+ quilting tools on the market.

Q: It's not uncommon for lakeshore property owners to return to their cabins in the spring to find damage to their shoreline, retaining walls, docks and boat lifts, and sometimes to the cabins themselves. What causes this?

Gypsy Moth Suppression Open Houses Rescheduled

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and partner organizations have rescheduled two open houses on proposed gypsy month suppression treatments in St. Louis and Carlton counties. The purpose of the open houses is to give residents the opportunity to learn more about the invasive insect. The public will learn more about MDA’s efforts to slow the spread of the gypsy moth.

According to a press release, two open houses, in Cloquet and Boulder Lake area, originally scheduled for February 29 will now be held on Monday, March 26. The informational meetings were postponed due to a snow storm in the northeastern part of the state.

The open house at the Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center, 7328 Boulder Dam Rd., Duluth will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and the Cloquet open house will be held at the Cloquet Public Library, 320 14th St., in Cloquet from 4:00 p.m.

Healthy Foods Conference

The St. Louis County Extension Office is conducting a one-day conference on home fruit and vegetable production as a part of its Healthy Foods Initiative to improve access to healthier food as a means of improving the health of individuals and communities.

Topics include information on vegetable varieties, small space gardening, growing hardy fruiting shrubs, small fruits and fruit trees, and success secrets for the northern gardener. The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday March 17, 2012 at the Clinton Community Center, 8907 Hwy. 37 in Iron, MN.

The cost of the program is $40 which includes lunch, refreshments, and a 2012 reference book developed specifically for the program.
