Standing with Kids!

Curtis Oil's SuperAmericas are standing with kids!

Manager of Curtis Oil's Super America Mike Letica contacted First Witness Child Abuse Resource Center to offer help with their "I Stand With Kids!" campaign.

First Witness is promoting their campaign with SuperAmerica through selling Blue Kids flyers for $1 at participating stores. The campaign is centered on creating awareness about child abuse resources in our community and ways to get involved in preventing child abuse. April is national Child Abuse Prevention month.

First Witness operates from a 3,800-square foot headquarters in Duluth's Central Hillside neighborhood, built by the Junior League of Duluth and opened in 1993. It is an official Children's Advocacy Center accredited by the National Children's Alliance.

Lab Tests Back for Accused ND Patrol Captain

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - Lab tests show that a North Dakota Highway Patrol captain arrested in Minnesota allegedly had a blood alcohol level nearly twice that state's legal limit for driving.

Grand Forks regional Capt. Kevin Robson was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving southeast of Bemidji, Minn., on March 10. The charge is a misdemeanor.

Patrol Superintendent James Prochniak says Robson remains on paid personal leave while the patrol looks into the arrest.

The 42-year-old Robson has been with the North Dakota Highway Patrol for 15 years and is the administrative commander for a seven-county region. He supervises 29 officers. He did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment on Tuesday.

Alcohol Awareness Month

April is Alcohol Awareness month and members of the Mesabi Safe Communities Coalition (MSCC) and Hibbing Chemical Health Advisory Committee (HCHAC) are encouraging community members to take this time to educate themselves and their loved ones about the dangers of alcohol misuse and abuse.

According to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, alcohol costs the U.S. society $40-$60 billion annually due to health and medical care costs, lost productivity, motor vehicle crashes, violent crime including homicide, suicide and sexual and other assaults as well as the cost of social programs to help those affected. This cost far outweighs the amount collected in tax revenues from alcohol sales.

Lock-Down Drill at Mesabi Range

On Wednesday, Mesabi Range College participated in a drill to simulate a "lock-down" and a "STAR ALERT" on the Virginia Campus. During the "lock-down" drill, an announcement was transmitted over the PA system.

The entire drill lasted less than 15 minutes. The simulated "lock-down" and STAR ALERT prompted the arrival of the Virginia Law enforcement officials.

We had active participation from the Virginia Police Department and Cadets from Hibbing Community College Law Enforcement program.

Mesabi Range College Critical Incident Team in conjunction with Minnesota State College & University Professionals and Chief of Police, Dana Waldren and Officer Anthony Gielen planned for over a month and a half to best prepare our faculty, staff and students for an emergency crisis incident.

We are pleased to announce that Mesabi Range experienced a successful lock-down learning experience and will be participating in additional "lock down" trainings.

Youth Adult Alcohol Survey in Hibbing

Fairview Range and the Hibbing Chemical Health Advisory Committee through the Invitation Health Institute will be conducting a Young Adult Alcohol Survey (YAAS) in the Hibbing community the week of April 9, 2012. Pre-survey mailings will go out to randomly selected young adults ages 18-25 years old beginning April 2, 2012.

The YAAS will be conducted in Hibbing in order to obtain local level data related to alcohol consumption among this age population and gauge young adult perceptions around alcohol use. The survey consists of 34 questions and as an incentive for each survey completed, participants will be able to donate money to a local charity. The more surveys that are completed, the greater the donations will be to our local charities.

The YAAS is part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) that the Hibbing Chemical Health Advisory Committee (HCHAC) was awarded in January of this year.
